Savage Inequalities...still.

Last night I had the fortunate opportunity to hear Jonathan Kozol speak at Ohio Dominican University. He was one of the first authors I read in my undergrad days who made me think about the disparities inherent in our American public school system. His book Savage Inequalities is heartbreaking, and unfortunately, too relevant; Mr. Kozol's speech highlighted the fact that schools today are perhaps more segregated and unequal than ever.

While standing in line to have my book signed, I felt nervous. I couldn't believe I was meeting such a amazing man whose legacy runs far and wide. And he was delightful. Asked us if we were teachers or students (how flattering!), and then we signed up to get emails regarding letter-writing campaigns and other methods of enacting social change. Yeah for brave folks like Jonathan Kozol.

Magic Mountain Fun Center

If you're looking for a way to beat the winter blues (or, more accurately, grays), check out Magic Mountain Fun Center. We visited the Polaris location last night, and the kids couldn't have been happier. I've driven by the place several times and tend to think of it as only offering outdoor activities. But inside are some fun discoveries. Like the giant climbing structure (which is a bargain on Tuesdays, when all kids ages 1-6 are just $2.50). There is a rather large arcade, too, and it looks like there is plenty of space to host parties. Even if we don't have a party there this year, we'll be sure to head back when the weather warms up; early bird mini golf on Saturdays and Sundays is only $2 a person. Now if only those gray skies would move on out.
